WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Donald Trump is doubling down on his threat to claim the Strait of Hormuz.

He posted a map on Truth Social with a circle around the strait and labeled it “new U.S. territory.”

That comes a week after he first said he would make such a declaration.

How the U.S. could realistically claim the waterway is murky.

International law recognizes it as passing through territorial waters owned by Iran and Oman.

Iran’s restrictions on its part of the vital trade route since the U.S. launched attacks against it has wreaked havoc on international oil prices.
