LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - In the high tech world we live in today, there is practically an app for everything.  If you are pregnant, the number of apps can be overwhelming!

Lake Charles Memorial Health System has launched a free app geared to help you stay ahead of the belly curve, with pregnancy milestones, health information, and post-partum care.

Jennifer Heape is 34 weeks into her first pregnancy, something she has tracked each week through the Memorial Mommy App.

"I want to know if she's right on track for growing properly, just to make sure that everything is okay and what I'm experiencing is right on track with how far along I am," said Heape.

Heape says one of her favorite features is the week-by-week animation of the baby's growth.  That is also something Dr. Brad Forsyth, Memorial Medical Group obstetrician/gynecologist, says helps women attach more deeply to their pregnancies and understand what is happening in their bellies.

"You can't look through your skin, look into your uterus and see what's happening," said Dr. Forsyth.  "It does allow you just a chance to know where your baby is in the process.  The other thing it has is animated features, so you can get an idea about what the movements look like.  So I feel it, but what exactly am I feeling?"

There are also weight tracking, appointment scheduling, and pre-labor tools to help you prepare for delivery day.

"I was able to download a birth plan straight from the app," said Heape.  "It gave me information about all the pre-natal classes I could sign up for and I was able to get information about how I could tour the facility."

Dr. Forsyth says the massive amount of pregnancy-related books and pamphlets can make some women feel like they are drinking from a water hose.  He says the app streamlines everything into one user-friendly tool.

"Conception, kind of all the way up to the post-partum time frame and it even has things for the baby: newborn shot record and newborn care," said Dr. Forsyth.

Heape says she plans to continue using the app once her daughter arrives.

"There's a section in there for post-partum and breastfeeding," said Heape.  "It has a lot of useful information that I've kind of gone through.  I haven't gone through it all yet, but it looks like it's going to be very useful."

The Memorial Mommy App is available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices.  Click here for more information.

You do not have to be a patient at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital to utilize the app's features.
