Week Ahead in Washington: May 17
Congress focuses on reconciliation while the NTSB investigates the UPS cargo plane crash
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Congress returns to Washington this week with a focus on a party-line funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security.
The funding bill that reopened the department last month did not fund ICE and Border Patrol, despite ending the historic DHS shutdown.
GOP lawmakers are now using the reconciliation process to fully fund DHS in an attempt to bypass any Democrat-led filibuster.
President Donald Trump has demanded lawmakers get the bill on his desk by June 1.
Meanwhile, the NTSB will hold a two-day investigative hearing on the UPS cargo plane crash this week.
The November 2025 crash in Louisville, Kentucky will be addressed May 19 and 20 as investigators hold a fact-gathering hearing with key witnesses.
Attendees can watch in person or via a livestream on the NTSB website.
And, President Donald Trump heads to New London, Connecticut to address the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s graduating class.
Last year, Trump gave the commencement address for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
