Ukrainian Embassy reopens to the public for Passport DC

WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - The annual Passport DC event took over Washington Saturday, with dozens of foreign embassies opening their doors to the public for a city-wide open house.

The Ukrainian Embassy returned to the festivities this year, marking its first public event since 2022. That’s when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of the country. The war continues to this day.

“Every single day, people are dying in Ukraine, are being killed by Russia. But that does not mean that Ukrainians do not keep on living, enjoying their life, and making their country better and more prosperous,” said Denys Sienik of the Embassy of Ukraine.

Sienik was among the many Ukrainians guiding guests through activities, tastes, and displays of their homeland. The embassy showcased Ukrainian culture beyond the ongoing battle.

“I want our guests to feel how much Ukraine can give to this world and how rich our culture is,” Sienik said.

For organizers of Passport DC, the event promotes education and diplomacy through embassy visits across the city.

“It’s just wonderful to hear the real stories from the real people that’s happening, you know, in their countries,” said Dania Jolley of Events DC.

“They’re our neighbors here in the District so we want to make sure that we are great partners with them,” Jolley said.

The Ukrainian Embassy also highlighted a historic connection to America’s founding. The embassy preserves the room in its building where George Washington effectively created the District of Columbia, showcasing how the fight for freedom and independence is a universal experience. The highlight comes as America approaches its 250th anniversary.
