LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The Lake Charles mayoral race is packed with candidates this upcoming year and so far, there hasn't been too much controversy among the group.

Well, that silence was broken this past weekend when a man was caught red-handed destroying and stealing a candidate's signs.

According to Pastor Joe Banks, there is video of a man attempting to steal his campaign sign.

Banks was on his way to Church when he says he saw this man at the Valero gas station on Country Club road.

"I was really kind of shocked he already moved the sign it was totally gone,"

Banks said he then approached the man.

"He said oh I'll put it right back I was like wow that was strange why would you take it down if you were going to put it right back,"

Feeling doubtful, Banks called his neighbor and logistics coordinator for his campaign, Antonio Rogers, who was in charge of where the signs were placed.

"Whether it was done personally or politically it's sad it's a hurting thing you pay good money these signs can run anywhere between $60 and 80,"

Rogers proceeded to call the sheriff's office after both he and Banks had an interesting conversation with the man.

"He told me he was working for someone and they had given him approval to remove the signs," he said.

"It's a sad situation but we're going to stay positive we're gonna stay upbeat and we're going to run a good race,"

According to the Banks campaign, there are other signs missing from around the city, including one in front of his campaign headquarters. It is unsure whether these incidences are related.
