I-210 causes concern for commuting teachers and students

SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) - A major concern for Teri Johnson, president of the Calcasieu Federation of Teachers, is how teachers who live and work on opposite sides of the river are going to make it to class on time once construction starts.

"Not only do they have to worry about getting to school on time, what are the day cares going to be obliged to do to help them out? To get there on time. Sometimes they can't drop their child off early enough," Johnson said. "Are they going to get there in time to get their lesson? That's a worry. That is. For parents, for teachers, even for school officials. It's going to be a big adjustment."

Another concern from the public: how will emergency responders get to accidents when the project starts?

"I know I travel that road every day, the traffic as we speak on I-210 is horrendous at this time of the afternoon and it's only going to get worse once construction starts," Francis Andrepont, District 13 police juror, said.

While construction isn't expected to start for a few more months state police are already preparing.

"One thing that we've done is we've increased the number of motorcycles that we have available, to respond to crashes on the bridge being as it's going to be more difficult to get to those crashes than normal due to the lane closure," James Anderson, Sergeant for Louisiana State Police, said.

The anxiety is growing for those who commute.
