Suspect in Sierra Bouzigard murder found hanging in jail
LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - The suspect in a nearly decade-old murder case was found hanging in jail this morning, authorities say.
Blake A. Russell, 32, was found hanging in a mop closet at the Calcasieu Sheriff's Prison around 5 a.m. Thursday, June 21. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Russell had been incarcerated since July 2017 after being charged with the 2nd degree murder in the 2009 murder of Sierra Bouzigard.
Dana Bouzigard, Sierra's mother, responded to the news of Russell's death:
"May God have mercy on his soul, and prayers for his family. I don't believe there will ever be closure, there is no such thing.
For me, this is justice."
Bouzigard's body was found by a bicyclist on November 23, 2009. Authorities say she died from blunt-force trauma to the head and that her body had likely not been there more than 24 hours.
Several of the items at the scene contained DNA.
Authorities said she had been seen in several places in the Moss Bluff area the night before her body was discovered. At least 22 acquaintances were interviewed. She was last seen alive between midnight and 2:30 a.m. that day at a house on Victoria Drive in Moss Bluff.
The official cause of Russell's death is unknown at this time but foul play is not suspected. The investigation is continuing.
