SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA (KPLC) - Parents can now stop by any MoneyGram location across the state to make cash payments toward child support dues, thanks to The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services teaming up with the money transfer company.

"Here is an opportunity for the non-custodial parent to go somewhere else and make that cash payment," said Lydia Scales, director of the Department of Children and Family Services Child Support enforcement program.

There are an estimated 780 MoneyGram locations that can be found at retail stores like Walmart, CVS, Albertsons and gas stations.

"We do want it to be convenient for our non-custodial parents who pay but even more so for those who are unbanked - don't have a savings or a checking account or do not have a credit or debit card," said Scales. "So we figured some of these guys, and mothers, too, may want to pay child support, but rather than going to a bank and getting a money order or picking up a stamp and an envelope they can go right there."

In 2016, the state collected $417 million in child support payments but is still pursuing $1.7 billion in back child support.

Across Southwest Louisiana, $23.2 million was collected and $77.9 million is owed in back child support.

When the payments aren't made, those who owe will be summoned to court. If they don't show, law enforcement will get involved.

"We work with support enforcement to round those individuals up," said Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso. "We clear up some spots in the jail and we make room and make sure that we get a large support. Obviously, it is a shame - they have an obligation and they should be taking care of them, but when they don't, there is a mechanism in there for people to collect their child support."

Required for a MoneyGram payment:

  • Cash only
  • A LASES member number or LASES case ID.
  • "Receive Code" 14695 (Note: This code can be obtained from the DCFS/Child Support Website, MoneyGram Website or by providing the retailer with the name Louisiana Child Support.)
  • In addition to the payment, MoneyGram charges a $3.99 convenience fee.

"They post that and it's electronic - it's EFT - we will get notified that a payment has been made," Scales said.
