SULPHUR, LA (KPLC) - A Wednesday morning head-on collision on La. 27 north of Sulphur left one dead and one injured, state police said.

Sgt. James Anderson with Louisiana State Police Troop D said the head-on collision occurred around 6 a.m. on La. 27 at Barney Hoffpauir Road. The investigation revealed a 2004 Nissan Sentra driven by Jesse Warren Touchet, 38, of DeQuincy was headed north on La. 27 when for unknown reasons crossed the center line and into the center turn lane. The Sentra struck a 2015 GMC Sierra driven by Murrell Koonce, Jr., 65, of Sulphur that was headed south in the inside lane.

Touchet was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner's Office, Anderson said. Koonce received minor injuries. Both men were wearing a seat belt.

The crash remains under investigation and routine toxicology samples are pending.

Troop D has investigated five fatal crashes resulting in 8 deaths in 2017.
