CALCASIEU PARISH, LA (KPLC) - It was just after 2 a.m. on Aug. 21, 2003.
The body of Misty Lynn Guillory was found on East Prien Lake Road. She was just 15 years old when she was struck and killed.
"Kinda went downhill after that; she was kind of the glue that held our family together," said Destiny Guillory, Misty's sister.
Lake Charles police said she was struck by a car and left in the roadway.
"These people, we believe, intentionally ran this little girl over," said Deputy Chief Mark Kraus.
Investigators believe Guillory left home late that night and was picked up by three men as she walked down the street. It's unclear what happened between then and Misty's death, but police say an altercation occurred, leading Misty to get out of the vehicle. She then began walking again.
That's when she was hit.
Those three men were arrested, indicted by a grand jury for Misty's death. It seemed the case was about to be solved, but by 2006 those charges were dropped because of a lack of evidence.
"You never fully recover; I still haven't," Destiny said. She was 9 years old when her sister was killed.
"The wrong place, the wrong time, and she was just involved with the wrong people," she said.
Destiny dusts off an album dedicated to her sister., admitting she hasn't looked at it in years.
"Things collected over the years; my sister Amber wrote a poem," she said. "Just everybody put all kinds of different things"
It's filled with cards, pictures, newspaper clippings, even a poem - "Misty's first Christmas in Heaven."
It's now been 13 Christmases.
"It's never been the same; holidays are never the same. We haven't had the whole family together since it happened," Destiny said.
As most prepare to celebrate the New Year., for the Guillorys, it's another year without closure, without answers, and without Misty.
