LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - BESE District Representative Holly Boffy was in town observing aspiring teachers at Barbe High School on Monday.
The classroom tour is a part of the Louisiana Department of Education's "Believe and Prepare" pilot program.
Local K through 12 schools partner with McNeese State University to offer hands-on classroom experience for student teachers.
Boffy said the program is flourishing because of its structure.
"I think it's one that it's partnerships but then two, it's been created at the local level. From these partnerships and this pilot program, our state has learned a lot and will certainly help us as we work on policy which is really the next step in this process," she said
Barbe is one of 12 Calcasieu schools participating in the initiative.
All BESE representatives are currently touring participating schools in their district.
"I think it's important for us to talk about the fact that these pilots have looked different across the state. Based on those differences, we are able to really support our districts and our universities in working together to make sure that our teachers are learner ready on day one," Boffy explained.
The initiative began in 2014 and the board will be reviewing program policies this summer.
