New program supports young, single moms with classes and baby items
LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Pink Life, a local non-profit, is starting a new program called Earn While You Learn. The nine-month program begins March 4 and will be held weekly with a new topic each month.
Michelle LeBlanc has been a recipient from Pink Life since she had her daughter six months ago. As a young, single soon-to-be mother she was terrified, but found a support system through Pink Life.
"I was scared and afraid because I didn't have anyone here to help me," said LeBlanc. "Pink Life made me realize there are still people that do want to help you, especially when you fall in a bad situation. Being a single mother is not as scary when you have someone to help you."
The program is specifically for moms or soon-to-be moms 25 and younger who may not be fully prepared to be a mother. It will offer a wide range of courses on Safe Sleep, nutrition, infant CPR, and education and financial advice. By participating, moms will receive diapers, wipes, and gently used baby items for free.
"At one point in time I was a young single mom struggling so I know how it is," said Clemons. "This program will bring hope and color in their life. Having a child is not the end of the world, it's only the beginning.
Aline Pires and Ryan Clemons head up the program. It runs entirely off of private donates.
"We reach out to young mothers who are suffering and in need of support," said Pires. "I try to encourage them. That's what the program is all about. We don't just give diapers and information, we give them hope."
The first Earn While You Learn class is Friday, March 4. The classes are held weekly for nine months from 4-7 p.m. at the Allen P. August Multi-Purpose Center located at Moeling Street.
