LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Hydration can be critical for athletes on the field. That's why one Lake Charles native invented a new product that could revolutionize the way athletes stay hydrated in the game. Joseph Tucker invented the world's first re-hydrating mouth guard, or Hydra-Guard, as he later coined it. Now, the product is ready for launch and Tucker believe it will be a game changer.

"You can not hydrate at a consistent level on and off the field," said Tucker.

Tuckers says he came up with the idea in 2012 while training for his second marathon. He realized he wasn't getting the hydration he needed.

"I came up with the idea of a hands-free hydration system, or Hydra-Guard as I later coined it," said Tucker.

Hydra-Guard is a refillable mouth guard allowing athletes to stay replenished while in the game. The guard holds a pouch of liquid and the wearer simply presses their tongue against the roof of their mouth for an instant sip. It takes seconds to reload.

"You're not going to find anything out there like it. There's no other re-hydrating mouth guard out there that's going to put more electrolytes into an athletes mouth," said Tucker.

Tucker has been working with LSU on this project and is speaking with other universities and high schools. After four years of development and branding, the product is ready for launch. Consumers can start purchasing Hydra-Guard at its website for $34.99 starting February 25.

He is also working with LSU scientists on an all-natural, high electrolyte sports drink that should be released in March.

Of course, Tucker hasn't forgotten about home. He hopes to see Lake Charles athletes using the product soon.

"Hydra-Guard plans on making a big footprint in Lake Charles with out schools, our coaches, and our trainers of all sports," said Tucker.

Tucker will be a guest speaker at TEDxLSU on March 5. The TEDx conference is an event committed to spreading ideas and creativity.
