CROWLEY, LA (KPLC) - The Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office said a missing elderly Rayne woman was found dead Wednesday.

Evelyn Leger, 71, was found dead in a field near Crowley around 11 a.m., the Acadia Sheriff's Office said. The coroner's office's said she appears to have died from natural causes.

Deputies found her 1994 Buick Regal in a field off Maraist Road.

"Investigators at the scene believe that Mrs. Leger became confused while driving and drove the vehicle into a field which then became lodged when she attempted to turn around," said Maxine Trahan, sheriff's office spokeswoman. "It is believed that Mrs. Leger then began walking in the rural area in an attempt to get assistance. Her body was located approximately 200 yards from her vehicle."

Leger was last seen at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Crowley.

"When she failed to return home family members contacted law enforcement for assistance in locating her," Trahan said.

The sheriff's office thanks the public for their help in trying to locate Leger.
