LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Three Barbe High School students face charges after a fight at the school last week in which the school resource officer was punched in the face, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office authorities said.
The officer was attempting to break up the fight on Thursday, Oct. 22 when he was also kicked in the ribs, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Kim Myers said. He suffered a mild concussion and bruised ribs as well as swelling to his face.
The officer, who is a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's deputy, responded to the fight between two students — one a juvenile and the other a 17-year-old — at the school's bus ramp at 3:30 p.m., Myers said. As the deputy attempted to stop the fight, the juvenile refused to cooperate and "tried to evade the officer's hold."
The deputy hit the back of his head on a metal post before taking the student to the ground, Myers said. While the officer attempted to handcuff the juvenile, another student (also a juvenile), approached him from behind and hit him in the face with his fist. The deputy also felt someone kick him in his rib cage.
The juvenile involved in the fight was charged with disturbing the peace by fighting and resisting an officer. He was released to his guardian.
The 17-year-old charged with disturbing the peace by fighting and was released to his guardian.
The juvenile accused of punching the officer was charged with battery of a police officer, interfering with a police officer and disturbing the peace by fighting.
