Lake Charles man dies after car goes into lake in Texas

A Lake Charles man has died after his body was found along with his car under water in a lake in Bridge City.

Texas authorities identify the victim as 49-year-old Charles Huffman.

According to KBMT, authorities were called to the end of Lake Street in Bridge City Sunday morning after a car was discovered in the lake at the end of the road.

A dive team was called to determine if the driver was still in the car or had left before officials arrived. A diver went into the lake around 11:35 a.m. and found the body around 12:20 p.m.

KBMT reports investigators believe the car went into the water sometime between 12 a.m. and 3 a.m. Sunday. The car was spotted by a fisherman sometime before 10 a.m. The fisherman called the fire department and the investigation began.

A Department of Public Safety trooper said it appears Huffman was driving around a turn, hit a loose patch of sand and the car overturned and went into the canal.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine an official cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing.
