PORT ALLEN, LA

The family of a man who died Tuesday night inside the West Baton Rouge Parish Jail wants to know how he died, and say so far jail officials have not given them any details.

Ervin Edwards, 38, was found unresponsive in a holding cell less than 30 minutes after being brought to the facility, according to Sheriff Mike Cazes. He had just been arrested at the Chevron gas station on Highway 415 after getting into an argument, and was to be charged with disturbing the peace and resisting arrest, Cazes said.

Edwards' girlfriend and mother say they told police not to use a taser on Edwards because he had high blood pressure and other medical conditions, but Sheriff Cazes said officers and deputies had no choice.
