STARKS, LA (KPLC) - Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office authorities are investigating the parish's first fatality of 2013, according to a departmental news release.

Authorities said on Jan. 1, at approximately 12:40 a.m., the Sheriff's Office responded to a single car accident at the intersection of Evangeline Highway and Second Street in Starks.

Authorities said the preliminary investigation revealed the car, driven by 40-year-old Alvin Hodges, of Starks, was traveling westbound on Evangeline Highway and appeared to have crossed the center line.

Authorities said the vehicle ran off the road, struck a culvert and flipped, coming to rest on the roof in a ditch.

Authorities said Hodges was transported to a local hospital where he died as a result of his injuries.

The passenger of the vehicle was transported to an Alexandria hospital where she is listed in moderate but stable condition, according to authorities.

Authorities said neither Hodges nor the passenger were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

As mandated by state law, in all traffic fatalities, a toxicology report will be performed on Hodges, authorities said.
