Former Arkansas State, Tulane Coach Dies

LAKE CHARLES (KPLC) - Bennie Ellender, a native of Sulphur, Louisiana, best known for his coaching tenures at Arkansas State and Tulane University, died on Thursday night at Sunrise Assisted Living in Metairie.

Ellender, who also coached at West Lake High School, was the head football coach for the Red Wolves from 1963-1970. During his time at Arkansas, he led the program to three straight Pecan Bowl Games, and during th 1970 season, his team finished 11-0.

He then moved on to Tulane University, where he served as the head football coach from 1971-1975. He ended his college coaching career with a 79-49-4 record.

Ellender suffered from Alzheimer's disease. He was 86-years old.
