The following is a press release from the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury:
As a new U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) approved housing counseling agency, the Police Jury Housing Department is now offering FDIC recognized financial courses on a variety of topics. The classes are free to residents of all income levels and covers topics such as debt management, credit repair, renter's assistance, foreclosures and more. For residents buying a house, both pre and post counseling is also available.
The Housing Department began this process over two and half years ago and the reality of this designation has finally become a reality." says Federal Programs Coordinator Tarek Polite. "The best part of the process is not the actual obtainment of the designation but that the primary beneficiaries of the services that will result from the designation are the citizens of Calcasieu Parish."
Classes will be offered quarterly at various locations throughout Calcasieu parish. Upcoming classes will be held at Central Library, 301 West Claude Street, Lake Charles at the following dates and times:
- July 24th 9am – 5pm
- October 9th 9am – 5pm
"Experts theorize that the recent meltdown of the housing market was largely attributed to the lack of knowledge for basic skills in owning and maintaining a home," says Polite. "With our new designation, the Housing Department will now be able to assist the community with helpful topics for first-time homeowners in hopes they won't run into trouble down the road."
