LAKE CHARLES (KPLC) - Like most political spouses, Crowley native Victoria Reggie has shied away from the limelight, something difficult to do as the wife of late Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy.

But her husband's brain diagnosis last year and his death on Tuesday have propelled Reggie into the national spotlight. Political pundits are now wondering out loud whether Reggie is interested in replacing her husband in the U.S. Senate.

Southwest Louisiana Congressman Charles Boustany is Reggie's cousin. He said he has no idea whether Reggie plans on running for Kennedy's senate seat.

"I think right now they're focused on the funeral and Vicky has her hands full," Boustany said.

Boustany said the Kennedy family is focused on funeral arrangements. However, Boustany said should Victoria decide to follow in her husbands footsteps, no one should count her out.

"Vicki's a lawyer in her own right," Boustany said. "She's a very smart woman and has been in politics and business and I have a lot of confidence in her. If she's intending on doing that, she'll put her hat in the ring."

If Reggie or any other family members opts not to campaign for the late senator's seat, it will be the first time since 1952 that a Kennedy has not been part of the U.S. Senate.
