SULPHUR, La. (KPLC) - Some Sulphur residents received documents in the mail over the weekend about a possible CO2 pipeline being buried beneath their properties.

The notices residents received are asking for their feedback about a proposed pipeline that would be constructed by Low Carbon Logistics CCS Transport, LLC.

The 11.8-mile pipeline called “Lake Charles Lateral” would run 12-inch pipe connecting the Lake Charles Methanol CO2 Facility south of Sulphur to the Green Pipeline system between Sulphur and DeQuincy.

“The first time I heard about the project was when I opened my mailbox on Friday. I had a one-inch stack of papers that I needed to go through to figure out exactly what’s happening,” Sulphur resident Sheila Broussard said.

Broussard said the pipeline route would run through her property.

“I don’t know if this is going to keep us from being able to do a sale. If there are repairs, once we sign up for all of this, we have to do some sort of signature. Once that happens, if they have a problem on the pipes, as far as I understand, they have a right to dig up my whole driveway, and I don’t have access to my property at all,” Broussard said.

Low Carbon Logistics CCS Transport, LLC has submitted the project plan to the Louisiana Office of Conservation.

“If an operator is seeking at some point to be able to expropriate right-of-ways for a pipeline, they come to our agency for a hearing to demonstrate that what they’re proposing matches the law on what gets you that certificate,” Patrick Courreges, Communications Director of the Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources, said.

Residents have until Sept. 8 to provide feedback. A public hearing on the project will be held in Baton Rouge on Sept. 9.
