LSU PD arrests man accused of armed robbery, attempted murder

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The LSU Police Department arrested a man accused of armed robbery and attempted murder.

Not too far away from LSU’s Student Union, Laville Hall is home for many LSU freshmen, like Zachary Ferguson.

“Yeah, from what I talked about with kids who have been here for much longer than me, they’ve said this isn’t really normally how they start off the school year,” explains Ferguson.

Ferguson is talking about what happened just a month ago outside of his dorm, on South Campus Drive. LSU police say Clarence Hypolite was reportedly involved in an attempted armed robbery and shooting. According to police, the attempted armed robbery happened overnight. During the altercation, police say the victim was shot. That person was taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. LSU officials say they believe the shooting was not a random incident and that the victim and suspect knew each other.

“Around the time that it happened, I actually just entered my building around 10 minutes before it happened,” adds Ferguson.

Since that night, LSU Police have been looking for Hypolite, but even after this incident LSU has had other reports. One report included a Doordash Delivery driver, trying to kidnap a LSU student on campus. After further investigation, a spokesperson with the university explains the driver was ultimately charged with simple battery and simple assault, and not booked into parish prison, but instead issued a ticket.

However, some students say they are on edge.

“I was like I can’t believe that would happen, and then it was like something else happened and then something else happened. I was like what’s going on this school year,” says LSU student Malaysia Dunn. Senior LSU student Dante Bastien explains, “from the past the four years that I have been here at LSU, I think there has been a crime issue on campus and around the local Baton Rouge area. A lot of students don’t feel safe around here, you know because of the activity that’s been going around.”

Some students say they are even taking extra precautions.

“Well, we have always tried to do like the buddy system, never walk alone, always have someone with you or always be on the phone with someone if you are alone. We share each other’s locations as well. If we are not like near each other, we can always just look and say, ‘Oh, she’s by such and such,’” says Daja Thomas who also goes to LSU.

LSU Police, long with assistance from US Marshals, got Hypolite to turn himself in this morning. Authorities report Clarence Hypolite, 20, was transported to East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

There is no current threat or ongoing emergency on the campus of LSU, according to officials.
