Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) - A Lake Charles firefighter received a minor burn injury battling a house fire on Windmill Lane off Gauthier Road Tuesday afternoon.

The fire department got the call around 5 p.m. Ten LCFD trucks and one Westlake Fire Department truck worked the scene, taking hours to get the flames under control as the fire burned through the roof of the home.

A woman, three children and 11 animals lived in the home. The family and their pets were not injured.

The family was still living in a camper at the time because of hurricane damage, but the homeowner said they were close to moving back in.

“Appliances were delivered last week,” homeowner Maxine Dion said. “We just unloaded the new dining table, the chairs and chests of drawers and night stands the day before yesterday.”

The community has set up a fundraiser for the Dion family as they search for a new home and replace many of their belongings. You can donate HERE.

One firefighter received a minor burn, and officials said other firefighters were treated to prevent dehydration. The cause was still under investigation as of Tuesday night.
