Jeff Davis D.A. remembered for dedication to family & community
Lake Charles, LA (KPLC) - People throughout Southwest Louisiana are stunned at the sudden and unexpected death of Kevin Millican, the new district attorney in Jeff Davis Parish, sworn in just this past January.
Millican served as D.A. for only seven months but had worked in the office for about twenty years. Hearts are heavy throughout the community.
It’s a somber day at the courthouse where, on the second floor, a black wreath adorns the door of the D.A.’s office. Those who worked with Millican are in shock after his sudden death of an apparent heart attack.
Those who knew him say he was a good man, dedicated to his family and serving the community.
“We’ve been punched in the gut. Kevin was a man of faith; he was a hard worker. He was a brilliant attorney, and he was a personal mentor for me. And I know I’m not the only one who feels that way,” Millican’s first assistant D.A. Elliott Cassidy said.
Cassidy has been sworn in as acting D.A. He says people are hurting.
“We’re devastated. I met with the staff this morning, let them know, ‘yeah, we’re open, we’re here to do the people’s work.’ But it’s tough and I know it’s going to be tough,” Cassidy said.
Cassidy says the governor will set a special election. But for now, the community focuses on a man taken far too soon and the heartbroken family he leaves behind. Millican was 49 years old.
Services for Millican are Saturday, July 24, at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church on State Street in Jennings. Visitation is at 10 a.m, followed by a rosary at 11:15, with the funeral mass at noon.
