LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Going into effect July 1, 2021, SOWELA Technical Community College will acquire the Lamar Salter campus located in Leesville.

Lamar Salter is currently part of Central Louisiana Technical Community College in Alexandria. The campus realignment was approved Wednesday, April 14, during the meeting of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System Board of Supervisors in order to improve administrative efficiency and the delivery of instructional and workforce training.

“The addition of the Lamar Salter Campus in Leesville will allow SOWELA to expand the delivery of instructional programs and business/industry services in Vernon Parish. Already a military friendly campus, SOWELA will be positioned to work closer with Fort Polk and provide training programs specifically for active-duty soldiers as well as soldiers transitioning out of the military,” SOWELA Chancellor Dr. Neil Aspinwall said. “Designated as the #1 Community College in Louisiana for 2018, 2019, & 2020 by Wallethub, we look forward to making the Lamar Salter Campus a permanent part of SOWELA and continuing our tradition of workforce development and academic excellence.”

The Lamar Salter campus offers programs in automotive, business administration, carpentry, outdoor power equipment, practical nursing (LPN), and welding. It has workforce development partnerships with Fort Polk and multiple private businesses to train active-duty military who are nearing the end of their enlisted service for civilian careers.

The addition of the Lamar Salter Campus in Leesville brings SOWELA’s campus total to four, with the main campus in Lake Charles. It has two other satellite campuses in Oakdale and Jennings.

Currently, 19 faculty and staff support the educational priorities at Lamar Salter. The instructional site is home to 300 students, including high school dual enrollment, adult basic education, workforce development training, general education courses, and career and technical education programs.

SOWELA is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates. The College will now apply to SACSCOC for accreditation of the Lamar Salter instructional site.
