LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - McNeese softball got offensive production throughout its lineup here Wednesday night and used a four-run fourth inning on its way to a 7-1 win over Louisiana Tech.
McNeese (18-19) outhit La. Tech (13-16) 9-5 and got at least one hit from eight different players along with solid pitching from Saleen Flores and Ashley Vallejo who combined to pick up the win.
As a team, the Cowgirls stole eight bases with Chloe Gomez, Haylee Brinlee, Alayis Seneca, Tayler Strother, and Jil Poullard all picking up one apiece.
Flores improved to 5-6 on the year with the win after allowing one run on four hits, two walks with one strikeout in four innings. Vallejo was almost perfect on the night allowing one hit with six strikeouts in 3.0 innings. Vallejo retired the first three batters she faced in the fifth inning then allowed only two runners to reach base in the next two innings. She gave up a walk and a hit to the first two batters she faced in the sixth then struck out the side to end the inning. In the seventh she got pinch hitter Bailey Wright to fly out to left before striking out the leadoff batter Kylie Neal and Caroline Easom to end the game.
Brinlee’s solo home run in the second inning broke a scoreless game to give the Cowgirls the early lead. The long ball is her fifth of the season.
La. Tech used a suicide squeeze in the fourth inning to tie the game at one apiece. The Techsters left the go-ahead runner stranded after Flores got Olivia Ellingsworth to ground out the Aaliyah Ortiz at first base for the third out. McNeese took the lead for good with four runs on three hits. Perrin got things started with a single up the middle then went to second on a sac bunt by Ortiz before stealing third.
Brinlee walked and stole second to put runners on second and third for Strother. Strother singled to right-center, scoring both Perrin and Brinlee for a 3-1 lead. McNeese kept the pressure on the La. Tech defense when Strother moved into scoring position by stealing second. A walk by Poullard then a stolen base put runners on second and third again. This time it was Cori McCrary who came up with the timely hit with a single up the middle that scored two more runs for a 5-1 lead. Two more runs in the fifth off a Padyn Williams single scored Ortiz and Perrin for a 7-1 lead. Perrin led the inning off with a single and Ortiz reached base on a walk.
McNeese will travel to Hammond this weekend for a three-game Southland Conference series against Southeastern Louisiana.
