LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The No. 2 seeded Fairview Lady Panthers overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to win back-to-back Class B State Championships. Fairview used a 19-7 third quarter to pull past top-seeded Hathaway 55-51 at the University Center in Hammond.
The title is head coach Kyle Jinks’ 11th.
“I’m going to start putting them on my toes,” laughed Jinks during the postgame press conference.
The two schools met in the 2020 Class B Championship with the Lady Panthers winning, 65-55.
Fairview’s five-point win was the tightest margin-of-victory amongst Jinks’ championship teams as Hathaway came out the aggressor in the first half. Behind a 13-0 run in the second quarter, the Lady Hornets would build the double-digit halftime advantage. Sophomore Lamiyah Sanchez was key during the run as she totaled 18 points and rebounds in the contest.
The Lady Panthers behind the Class B Most Outstanding player, Rylee Jinks, would mount a comeback in the third quarter as Fairview went on a 19-4 run to open the half. Jinks would finish with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists in the win. Coco Williams’ 12 points and Rylee Clouds’ 17 points also paced the Fairview offense.
While Fairview loses four starters to graduation, Hathaway returns every player that recorded minutes in the championship game.
“I feel this loss hurts way more than last year’s loss,” said Hathaway coach Courtnee’ Young. “But the bright side is we only lose one senior and that senior didn’t even see the floor tonight.”
