Lake area experts assist in Hurricane Town Hall

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Hurricane recovery is like a marathon, not a sprint. That’s why some local experts hosted a hurricane town hall today to provide resources to residents.

Five months after Laura, experts gathered at the corner of Broad and Ryan Street Saturday afternoon, to provide the community with some much-needed answers as hurricane recovery still continues.

A lawyer, a realtor, a contractor, a loan officer, and even a therapist were at the town hall this afternoon providing information to the community regarding hurricane recovery. They explained things like demand surge, and the best way of handling insurance.

“A lot of the tension falls off after a few weeks after the headlines disappear,” says realtor and organizer, Tatsi McKissick. “So, we wanted to give people a resource, and a way to come together now after you know it’s been a quarter of a year after the hurricanes.”

McKissick, along with a lawyer, loan officer, and even therapist were offering guidance.

“I think that just really speaks to the need of the community, that speaks to the need of Lake Charles and the surrounding areas, that people are still going through it. Even though it happened a quarter of a year ago, people are still experiencing the effects of it.”

Charlotte Morgan says attending the town hall provided her with relief.

“I have a lot of anxiety about filing the claims for the hurricane, insurance claims, and I’ve heard so many different things, so I wanted to come and find out more information on how to proceed with it.”

She still feels like her situation hasn’t moved since hurricane Laura

“In fact, I still feel like I’m kind of camping out in a why because I haven’t been able to get things completed. and one of the big problems is finding contractors. I feel more comfortable about it now.”

She came for some answers

“I think a lot of people are feeling stuck,” McKissick says. “A lot of people don’t know that there are options, and I want them to know that there are options.”

McKissick says they plan to host it monthly. They have yet to announce the date but say the next one will be streamed.
