LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - College football is back in Southwest Louisiana.
Following a 410-day layoff, McNeese will finally don a helmet for practice Wednesday as the Pokes prepare for the upcoming 2021 spring football schedule.
“We have to be able to tackle. We have to be able to break tackles. It’s been nearly a calendar year since we’ve been here and we have had a chance to practice tackle football, and that’s critical in our sport,” said McNeese coach Frank Wilson. “You have to be able to do those things to have success.”
McNeese will play a seven-game slate beginning on February 13 at Tarleton State. The Texans recently made the move to the Division I ranks and will be a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). Current Southland members SFA, Sam Houston, ACU and Lamar will be joining TSU in the WAC according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo! Sports.
The Cowboys will play three games at home this spring – Feb. 27 vs. Incarnate Word, Mar. 13 vs. Lamar, and April 10 vs. Sam Houston State. All three will be noon kickoffs in Cowboy Stadium due to hurricane damage to the stadium lights.
“I’m grateful. I’m thankful and excited,” said McNeese coach Frank Wilson. “At one point when we talked about playing the season and there was a discussion of ‘where will you play? Your field, your stadium was underwater coach, you guys can’t play at McNeese’. And we have a president (Dr. Daryl Burckel) that said ‘there is no Plan B. We’re playing at McNeese’. Even I didn’t know, but he said we’ll do it; we’ll be back.”
McNeese will play alternating road games with trips set for Southeastern on Mar. 6, Northwestern State on Mar. 20 and Sam Houston on Apr. 10 to round out the schedule.
