LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Five new deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in Region 5 over the past week.

The area has also seen 574 new cases, 310 of those in Calcasieu. There are also 12 deaths that health officials believe are from COVID-19, but have not been confirmed, in the Region 5 area of Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jeff Davis parishes.

COVID-19 hospitalizations are up to 62 in Region 5 - the area had 41 patients hospitalized with the virus on Nov. 9, which dropped to 31 on Nov. 10 before then climbing to 62 on Nov. 15.

Across the state, hospitalizations increased by 190 in the past week.

“That is a trajectory that is quite frankly unsustainable," said Gov. John Bel Edwards, addressing COVID-19 while speaking in Calcasieu Tuesday morning during a groundbreaking ceremony for an I-10 widening project.

The Louisiana Department of Health website only shows percent positivity numbers up to Nov. 4, but those show that between Oct. 29 and Nov. 4, 9.7 percent of COVID-19 tests in Calcasieu came back positive.

“There’s reason to believe the highest positivity rates in the state are in Calcasieu Parish right now,” Edwards said.

Across Region 5 in that same time frame, 8.2 percent of tests were positive - second only to the Monroe region’s 11.2 percent.
