LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - McNeese head volleyball coach Kristee Porter has announced the signing of five student-athletes to a National Letter of Intent. The class is one that consists of athleticism and versatility.
“We are so excited about of players we have coming in for the 2021 season,” said head coach Kristee Porter. "This is really a very diverse group that offers a range of skill that will help improve our ability to compete at a high level. I think the common themes for this class are athleticism and versatility.
The class includes three middle blockers including North Florida transfer Bria Plante. Jaylin Gordon and Nyla Encalade also join Plante as middle blockers. The Cowgirls also picked up outside hitters Aryn Johnson and Mikayla Kline.
Plante, listed at 6-4 from Mableton, Georgia also plays right side. While at North Florida she led all freshman with 83 kills and appeared in 27 matches. Plante also picked up 28 blocks and 15 digs. While at Alpharetta High she earned a Junior Olympic bid and earned All-American honors and was named to the AVCA Phenom Watch List in 2018 along with a list of several other accolades.
Gordan, a 5-10 outside hitter from Lake Elsinore, California attends Southern California Connections Academy.
“Gordon has a very high ceiling and is going to be scary to watch as she improves each day on the court,” said head coach Kristee Porter. "The first thing you notice about her is her infectious personality and energy. When you watch her play you immediately notice just how explosive she is. She will add excitement to the middle position for us and will be another dynamic athlete that will be a lot of fun to watch.
Encalade, a 6-0 middle blocker can also play right side. The native of McKinney, Texas is a four-year letterwinner at North McKinney High where she was named Newcomer of the Year, co-blocker of the year and offensive MVP.
"Encalade is another athletic player that will compete in the middle but has the ability to play on the pin. Her parents grew up in Louisiana so this is like bringing her back home. She is a good blocker that can affect the outcome of a match with her ability to make hitters change shots. Offensively she scores at a high percentage and is smart in her shot selection. She is a balanced player that doesn’t seem to get rattled very often. She will offer stability on the court and a dependable option for the setter. "
Johnson is a 5-8 outside hitter/defensive specialist from Rosharon, Texas attends Manvel High where she recorded 248 kills, .312 hitting percent with 34 assists, and 234 digs.
“Johnson is another player that makes everything on the court look easy. Watching her movement shows you just how cerebral she is when she approaches the game. You can tell the wheels are turning and she just seems one step ahead of everyone else. She is an excellent attacker and defender and should be a solid six rotation option.”
Kline is a 5-10 outside hitter from Evans, Georgia attends Lakeside High where she helped her team to a 137-27-2 record and three region titles during her career. Kline is a two-time All-Region Player of the Year, first team All-Region, and All-State.
“We believe Kline is just on the verge of really taking off. She has more high school accolades than we can mention but even with all of those there is more yet to be seen. She jumps extremely well and gets to a very high point quickly. Once she perfects her arm swing, she is going to literally be on another level. She has strong six rotation capability and her offense from back row will be a useful option.”
