LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Fourteen home games and a season opener at Nebraska highlights the 2020-21 McNeese Cowboys basketball schedule, head coach Heath Schroyer announced on Monday.
The Cowboys will open up on November 25 at the Big Ten Conference’s Nebraska Cornhuskers before starting a string of six home games before January, beginning on Nov. 30 against Bacone College.
All home games will be played at Burton Coliseum this year due to the damage to the H&HP Complex caused by Hurricanes Laura and Delta.
McNeese will also play home non-conference games on Dec. 2 vs. Dallas Christian, Dec. 11 vs. Campbellsville-Harrodsburg, Dec. 14 vs. Arlington Baptist, and against Champion Christian in back-to-back days on Dec. 29 and 30.
The Cowboys had schedule a home game on Dec. 5 vs. Alabama State, but the Hornets announced on Sunday they were played conference games only.
McNeese will visit Austin Peay on Dec. 18 to round out its non-conference slate. Southland Conference action will begin on January 2 at home against Central Arkansas. The Cowboys will also host conference foes Northwestern State (Jan. 9), Southeastern Louisiana (Jan. 20), Incarnate Word (Feb. 17), New Orleans (Feb. 20), Houston Baptist (Feb. 27), Nicholls (Mar. 3) and Lamar (Mar. 6).
“Scheduling is always a challenge,” said Schroyer who is entering his third year at the helm. "This year has been the most difficult year in my career from a scheduling standpoint. Coach (John) Aiken has worked extremely hard finalizing the schedule. But even though the schedule is complete, we need to be flexible because of the uncertainty of the pandemic.
“I’m excited to have 14 home games, and possibly a 15th. We’re talking to some teams to try to fill that vacant spot on December 5th. That in and of itself was extremely difficult during a year like this but I thought it was important to play at home as much as possible this year for our fans and community. We have all been through so much, and to give our fans and our community something to get behind and cheer for was at the top of my priority list.”
The Cowboys have spent the last month in Lafayette preparing for the season, working out at ULL’s practice facility.
McNeese returns record holding sharp shooter Dru Kuxhausen, a preseason first team all-conference selection, and the team’s top returning scorer in AJ Lawson, a preseason second team pick.
“I really like the make up of this team and our depth,” said Schroyer. “Depth is what we haven’t had the last two years. We are excited to get started and get ready to compete for a Southland Conference championship. More importantly, we are excited to wear the McNeese colors and represent Southwest Louisiana every night out.”
Game times and ticket information will be released in the coming days.
