BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - LSU right-handed pitcher Cole Henry has been selected in the second round (No. 55 overall) by the Washington Nationals in the 2020 MLB Draft.

The pick is valued at about $1.31 million. Henry has already said he will sign with the team.

“It was really exciting to watch,” he said. “I really like [Max] Scherzer and [Stephen] Strasburg compete on the mound. They’re bulldogs out there. I’m actually a really big fan of Strasburg. I was probably like 11 or 12 and I went to one of his very first starts against the Braves. Ever since then, I’ve been a huge fan up until now.”

The 6-foot-4, 211-pounder from Florence, Ala. had a 3.03 ERA with six wins and three losses in his two seasons with the Tigers.

“LSU is one of the best programs in the country and I was really blessed to be able to play there and compete in one of the best conferences in the nation. And, obviously, it’s a big deal to be ‘the guy’ for LSU and Lousiana. They’re (fans) there in full force every time we play. It’s pressure-filled and it’s awesome and I’m really grateful for my couple years there at LSU,” Henry added.

In 77.1 innings on the mound, Henry gave up 65 hits and 31 runs. He struck out 95 batters.
