LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - A 12-year-old girl is dead following a house fire on Dobbertine Road, according to officials with the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The mother of the girl is in critical condition, as is her 11-year-old brother, although officials say he is stable.
Calcasieu Parish Coroner Terry Welke found that 12-year-old Ski Smith died of smoke inhalation, according to information from the coroner’s office.
It is the first fatal house fire in Louisiana in 2020, according to Ashley Rodrigue, spokeswoman for the State Fire Marshal’s Office,
The fire began before midnight on Tuesday, Jan. 14, in a trailer park on Dobbertine Road, which is in a subdivision off Common Street.
Rodrigue says there were four people in the house at the time of the fire: A 36-year-old man, the 39-year-old woman and her two children. The man owned the trailer and was allowing the woman and her children to stay there. He is expected to be ok.
The fire started in an end bedroom and the mom and kids were trapped in a middle room, Rodrigue says. The mom was able to call 911 to let firefighters know they were trapped in a room.
No names have been released yet, pending notification of next of kin.
Rodrigue says there were no smoke alarms in the trailer. She says the cause of the fire is currently undetermined, but officials aren’t ruling out an electrical malfunction.
