LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The Calcasieu Council on Aging’s “Very Merry Christmas Party" is one of the largest events for senior citizens in the Lake Area. The party hosted at the Lake Charles Civic Center has been an annual event for 26 years. Nearly 1,000 seniors from all over the Parish attend the party.
“You got people coming out that I haven’t seen in years and they come out to this event every year,” said attendee Charles Mitchell III. “I thank God for it.”
For Executive Director Jacqueline Green, it’s an opportunity to show that the community cares.
“We try to reach out to them during the holidays and make sure, that we have something for them to show them that they are loved through the holiday season and offer them something to feel that they have something for them, just for them to enjoy,” Green said.
From the music to the bingo games, every single aspect of the party is geared towards making sure that the seniors enjoy the event.
Linda Miller was at a loss of words when explaining what the event means for her.
“It makes your heart beat faster," Miller said. It makes you really appreciate the season, the Christmas season, and caring and loving for each other.”
This year’s event was sponsored by Entergy, TaD’s Louisiana Cooking, and The City of Lake Charles.
