Louisiana State Police is investigating the shooting, Sgt. James Anderson, Troop D spokesman, confirmed.

Chief Deputy Chris Ivey, Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office spokesman, said deputies were responding to a report of shots fired outside a residence on La. 101 north of Lacassine around 9:30 a.m.

When deputies arrived, they encountered 56-year-old Jeffery Smiley who refused to drop a weapon, Anderson said. Smiley was shot by a deputy.
