JENNINGS, La. (KPLC) - The Jennings Police Department has released the identity of the victim in a fatal shooting Wednesday night, according to Jennings Police.

Dwight Breaux, 42, was shot and killed on West Street in Jennings.

Police Chief Danny Semmes says police were dispatched to the scene around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2019.

Semmes says two victims with gunshot wounds were taken to a local hospital. One of the victims, later identified as Breaux, had been shot in the chest and died of his injuries. The other has been transferred to an area trauma center.

Semmes says a suspect, Steven John Edwards, 41, was arrested on West Street and remains in custody on one count of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Semmes says that the investigation is ongoing but that investigators believe it may have been related to a drug deal.

According to Semmes, there was a 3-year-old child present in a vehicle at the time of the shooting. The child was in the care of the other person who was shot. Semmes says the child was “almost struck” when a stray bullet went through a backseat window of the vehicle. The child is now with his mother.

The investigation is ongoing and KPLC will release more details when they become available.
