McNeese lands three on Preseason All-Southland First Team

FRISCO, Texas – McNeese offensive lineman Grant Burguillos, defensive end Chris Livings, and defensive back Colby Burton are all first team selections on the 2019 Preseason All-Southland Conference Football teams, the league office announced on Thursday.

The three are the only McNeese representatives on the two teams as first team selections are based on the previous year’s postseason accolades – Burton having been named to the 2018 first team while Burguillos and Livings garnered second team honors.

Burton started all 11 games for the Cowboys last season and recorded 31 tackles with two interceptions, eight pass deflections and 3.5 tackles for a loss.

He was named the SLC Defensive Player of the Week and national honorable mention honors by STATS after he intercepted two passes in a 23-21 win over 13th-ranked Central Arkansas.

In addition to his all-conference honors, the League City, Texas native earned second team All-Louisiana accolades.

Livings will be entering the 2019 season within striking range of the school’s career quarterback sacks record.

The Lake Charles native has recorded 20.5 sacks in his career, ranking him fourth on the all-time list and is 10.5 away from Bryan Smith’s record of 31. In addition, Livings has accumulated 31 career tackles for a loss and needs just a half TFL to move into the all-time top 10.

Last season, Livings tied a single-game school record with five QB sacks in a win over Abilene Christian and ended the season with eight takedowns on the year, matching his single-season career best from 2016.

Burguillos anchored the offensive line last season by playing a team-high 674 snaps in 11 games played while making nine starts.

The Mandeville native, who also earned second team All-Louisiana honors last year, allowed just two sacks on the season.

The preseason poll will be released next Thursday to kick off the annual SLC Football Media Day event.
