11th Annual B.A.A.K. Benefit Day helps at-risk youth

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - If you’re looking for a way to give back this weekend, you can dust off your Harley or pull out your cooking pot!

The 11th Annual B.A.A.K. Benefit Day will be held at Mary’s Lounge on Saturday, June 8.

B.A.A.K. stands for Benefiting Area At-Risk Kids of Southwest Louisiana. All proceeds from the one-day event will go to Harbour House in Lake Charles, an 18-bed emergency shelter for children in the five-parish area.

“Benefiting area at-risk kids is a group of volunteers that approached ETC Harbour House about doing a fundraiser because they wanted to spread awareness of child abuse and neglect in the area and they wanted to do something to support the kids that come to Harbour House," said ETC Executive Director, Amy Dunn.

Dunn said since B.A.A.K. started, it has helped raise nearly $150,000 for the organization. Being that Harbour House is a non-profit and have to rely on state funding, she said the extra money can definitely go a long way.

“Just in the past year, the B.A.A.K. funds helped us do some repainting that hadn’t been done in several years and get some new beds," said Dunn. "We hadn’t replaced our beds since Hurricane Rita and so it was time to do that and those are the kind of things that make it a more special environment for youth that have to be there.”

Katy Radford, a 10 year board member for B.A.A.K. says it’s uplifting to see how much the event has grown over the years but even more uplifting knowing that the money is going directly to the kids.

“Just hearing stories of how the money we’ve raised made a difference in their lives was heart touching,” Radford said.

The event kicks off Saturday with a poker run and ride. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the ride begins at 9 a.m.

The route starts and ends at Mary’s Lounge, with stops at Sam’s Cove in Westlake, Iron Horse Pub in DeQuincy, and Whiskey Bluff in Moss Bluff. Poke run costs are $25 for riders and $15 for passengers.

The event also includes a jambalaya cook-off which begins at noon.

Musician Johnny Jimenez will perform from noon to 3 p.m.

A silent auction is set for 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., followed by a live auction at 2 p.m. At 3 p.m., a raffle ticket will be drawn for two tickets to a New Orleans Saints game.

Event entry is $8 per person and covers the jambalaya, as well as the live and silent auction bids.
