LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - A jury duty scam that has made the rounds in Calcasieu Parish before is being tried again, local officials say.
Callers posing as sheriff’s deputies threaten that a fine must be paid for missing a jury duty summons and that a deputy will arrive shortly to collect the fine or make an arrest.
Michelle Jordan, director of personnel and resource development with the Calcasieu Clerk of Court, says the Clerk’s office does not impose fines for failure to appear for jury duty. Any notice about a failure to appear would be sent through the mail.
Jordan said the scam was utilized in 2017 and 2018.
Jordan asked anyone who may have fallen victim to the scam to report it to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office at 337-491-3600.
