IBERVILLE PARISH, La. (WAFB) - A man police believed pulled the trigger and killed a 14-year-old teen in Plaquemine has turned himself in, according to Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi.

Officials say bullets went through the walls of a home on Barrow Street in Plaquemine on April 24. Those bullets were intended for someone else. Instead, Johnathan Tobias, 14, was shot in the neck while going to the bathroom in his own home.

DeAndrea Cain, 18, was arrested Monday, June 3 in connection with the shooting death of Tobias. He’s charged with principle to second-degree murder.

JaMarkus Collins, 20, believed to be the one who pulled the trigger, turned himself in on Tuesday, June 4.

Sources say Collins’ attorney advised him to turn himself in. Collins is charged with one count of second-degree murder.

Cain was polite as he was hauled off to prison, but Sheriff Stassi says no amount of good manners can make up for his alleged role in Tobias’ death.

“It’s a case that has haunted us since April,” Stassi said in an interview conducted after Cain’s arrest. “To have this kind of thing go down where this young 14-year-old at the prime of his life was taken from us, there’s no excuse.”

Police say Cain and Collins targeted a Barrow Street home in Plaquemine, allegedly hungry for revenge for a shooting from two years ago. The bullets that ripped through the home were meant for someone else, but unfortunately, found the teen.

“He was just an innocent boy who was going to school, liked to play video games and shoot a little basketball on the weekends,” Stassi added. “It’s a shame that this young man was taken from us.”

The victim’s mother, Caroline Tobias, and older sister said that while this arrest will not bring back their loved one, they call it a small step toward justice.

“I thought like it wasn’t ever going to come to an end, but I’m so happy,” Tobias said in an interview after Cain’s arrest. “Emotionally, I’ve been crying every day, not sleeping, and can’t rest, but I feel good today.”

“We’ve had enough bloodshed and we’ve arrested enough people,” said Stassi. “It’s time to let the community heal and we’re not going to let a few bad eggs spoil what we have here in Iberville Parish.”
