LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Originally set to open April 2019, Erdace Apartments has pushed their opening date to sometime this summer.
“The original estimate was that the building will be finished and ready to move in late spring, but right now we are looking at early summer,” Jude Viator said.
Viator is the property manager at Muller’s Lofts, owned by the same company as Erdace. Once the new apartments open, Viator said he plans to work there.
Rain is the main reason for the delays according Viator.
“We had a very wet winter," Viator said. "The rain delays probably, if I had to guess, two months. it’s made it really hard because some of the construction can’t move forward until they get inside and the courtyard, it’s pretty muddy right now.”
While behind schedule, Viator says crews are working to complete the apartments safely and quickly. He says though each of the four buildings have been worked on separately, the complex won’t open until construction is complete on all units.
“There’s a general contractor that’s responsible for the development for the property," Viator said. "Under guidelines, we cannot take possession of property at all until it’s completely finished so we can’t even do pre-leasing. Even if some buildings are completely ready for moving in, we cannot do that until the whole project is completely ready.”
With news of Blue Dog Cafe closing just across the street, Viator hopes Erdace, and its tenants, will help contribute to downtown revitalization.
“I think this is one of the few more projects in the downtown area," Viator said. "I expect with this coming here, and more services and merchants coming to downtown Lake Charles, I expect another project or two to pop up. It would not surprise me a bit.”
