LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - McNeese softball concluded the 2019 Cowgirl Classic with a 4-3 win over Lipscomb on Sunday to end tournament action with a 3-3 record. The Cowgirls will travel to College Station, Texas this weekend to take part in the Texas A&M Aggie Classic.
“I’m proud of our kids,” said head coach James Landreneau. “This game had a lot of adversity. We got ourselves in a bind a few times but Alex Flores stayed composed and let her defense work behind her to get us out of some innings.”
Senior Taylor Edwards led McNeese at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double and scored three runs. Justyce McClain and Demi Boudreaux also picked up a double apiece.
After the Cowgirls went down in order for the first two innings, Edwards got things started in the third inning where McNeese tied the game 2-2. McNeese took the 3-2 lead in the fifth but Lipscomb tied it up in the sixth.
“The first couple of innings we were frustrated at the plate but we made some adjustments and once we got some people on, we got timely hitting. J-Mac (Justyce McClain) and Teddy (Taylor Edwards) came up with some big knocks today that helped us to get things going.”
A single in the right center gap by Haylee Brinlee allowed Edwards to score the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth.
Cowgirl ace Alexsandra Flores kept the tying runner stranded in the seventh inning after giving up a hit to Jordan Fortel. Flores stuck out Jenna Pealor for the second out and got Hannah DeVault to ground out to second base to end the game.
“It’s the next pitch, that’s what we live for. I’m proud of our kids for showing some maturity this early in the season. Hopefully this set a tone for the rest of the year.”
