Welsh farmer speaks out after at least five cows were shot
LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - A farmer north of Welsh is speaking out tonight after at least 5 of his cows were shot last weekend.
All of the animals survived, but owner Jeff Faul is definitely concerned.
"Just the thought of somebody coming along to do this is just senseless," Faul said.
He was shocked Monday morning when he went out to the pasture.
“Really it still didn’t register, went back to get two more bells and it registered,” Faul said. “That’s bullet holes.”
Faul says someone came to his property and intentionally shot his cows with a small caliber weapon.
“They didn’t just come by and spray my cows with a shooting, they stopped and aimed, every ones a head shot,” Faul said. “They were trying to kill my cows.”
After calling the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office and the agricultural commissioner, he realized more cattle were injured than he first thought.
“As the day went on, there’s more and more I noticed, so it’s between 8 and 12,” Faul said.
Fortunately, all of the cattle survived.
“They all have another 5, 6, 7 years of having calves, so that’s a loss too if they would’ve killed them,” Faul said. “You’re talking 40, 50, 60, 70 thousand dollars through the years they would’ve been productive.”
However, Faul says he’s unable to remove the projectiles.
“It’s lodged in their skull, I don’t know the effects of that,” Faul said. “I don’t know if it’s going to affect them later in life, I don’t know if it’s bothering them terribly.”
Faul hopes those responsible are found.
“You are very removed from reality and agriculture if you think in any kind of way that this is right or funny,” Faul said. “You don’t take other people’s property you don’t affect their livelihoods or try to.”
The award for any information that leads to an arrest has now increased to 2,200 dollars. If you have any information you are asked to call the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office.
