LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - A car crash at Southpark Drive and McNeese Street Thursday night raised concerns about traffic safety in the area.
While details of the crash have not been released yet, we’ve heard comments on social media from viewers saying they’d like to see a traffic light at that intersection.
One viewer said “This traffic light is very much needed here. Getting more and more dangerous to turn onto McNeese Street with the increase in housing and the new charter school.”
The Department of Transportation and Development confirmed Friday they just finished a study at that intersection after Lake Charles City Council approved it September 2018.
The DOTD Spokesperson, Tammy York said:
“The traffic study requested by the City of Lake Charles for the intersection of LA 3186 (McNeese St.) and Southpark Dr. was completed in December 2018. The findings were sent to the City of Lake Charles. The findings concluded that DOTD will add low-cost safety improvements to the intersections and recommended the City of Lake Charles widen and align Southpark Dr. The improvements include enhancing striping by adding a stop bar southbound, installing an intersection warning sign for eastbound, and increasing the stop signs sizes by 40%.”
