LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - While it's the time for celebrating a new year, it is also one of the deadliest holidays of the year.

Driving under the influence often ends in tragedy.

"Drinking and driving is something that's not cool," Yellow Cab Lake Charles owner Jordan Page said.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2017, there were more than 10-thousand deaths related to drunk driving.

"In a moment, suddenly their life is changed and they can't work, can't hold their baby, or whatever cause they been in a bad accident where someone was drinking and driving," lawyer Ron Richard said.

The Richard Law Firm and Yellow Cab Lake Charles will be offering 1000 free rides on New Year's Eve.

"That’s what I'm trying to do, is make every family safe in Calcasieu parish for that one night," Richard said.

Even days before New Year's Eve, Page says they are already seeing the effects of drunk driving during the holidays.

"One of our drivers got hit by a drunk driver last night and totaled out our cab,” Page said. “Bad thing is, that person that hit us, they don't realize what they put in jeopardy."

For five years, the two have worked to make sure people get home safely.

"You're not bar hopping for free, it's to go home, it's just for that,” Page said. “No we are not going to bring you from your home to the bar, we are only going to bring you home, it's called safe ride home. You be drinking we be driving, that's our big saying, if the cars not yellow it's not yellow cab"

Ron Richard is a personal injury lawyer, and says he sees enough tragedy.

"If we can make it so that only one person call and that person doesn't run into your mom or your grandma or your child,” Richard said. “Then we have served our purpose and it's worth the money and time we spent."

Free rides will begin on December 31 at sundown and last through the night.
