(KPLC) - A former Hathaway High School girls basketball coach is facing accusations of sexual contact with a student in Texas.
James Douglas Welch, 38, is facing counts of sexual assault of a child between 14 and 17 years old and and having an improper relationship with a student, according to court records in Harris County, Texas. He is free on $40,000 bond.
The allegations stem from his time as an assistant coach at Atascocita High School in Texas, according to a report from a Texas TV station.
Welch, who also taught world geography, is accused of kissing and inappropriately touching a 16-year-old female student while in the parking lot of a Walmart in May 2018.
Prior to going to work for Atascocita High School in August 2016, Welch was a successful coach at Hathaway High School, leading the Lady Hornets to the 2011 state championship game.
Jeff Davis School Board Superintendent Kirk Credeur said there were never any similar allegations while Welch was at Hathaway.
“This was suprising for us, it’s a very serious thing and he’s got some very serious accusations against him," Credeur said.
