The Eljay Foundation for Parkinson Awareness is the Gulf Coast Regional Chapter of the National Parkinson Foundation. Located in downtown Lake Charles, Louisiana this foundation is dedicated to promoting awareness for Parkinson disease and improving the quality of life of those affected.
Parkinson disease is a brain disorder. It occurs when certain nerve cells (neurons) in a part of the brain called the substantia nigra die or become impaired. Normally, these cells produce a vital chemical known as dopamine. Dopamine allows smooth, coordinated function of the body's muscles and movement. When approximately 80% of the dopamine-producing cells are damaged, the symptoms of Parkinson disease appear.
This 501 (c) 3 organization seeks to encourage Parkinsonians, their caregivers and the general public. Serving the Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana communities, the Eljay Foundation strives to contribute time and financial resources to maintain the efforts in finding a cure, improving the lives of those affected, and educating the community.
