CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital received scores in U.S. News and World Report's 2008 America's Best Hospitals listing in 12 specialty lines. St. Patrick was the only hospital in Southwest Louisiana to be listed on the publication's website in the areas of Heart and Heart Surgery and Cancer.
"Because of our experienced and dedicated heart team, CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital has continued to set the bar for excellence on both the state and national levels," said Bernard Leger, administrator at CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital. For example, the American Heart Association has recognized the team for their excellence in treatment of patients with heart attack, heart failure, and stroke. In addition, the care is often rated among the top in the country by many independent organizations such as the Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
In the area of cancer care, the Regional Cancer Center continues to provide advanced radiation therapy treatment, digital mammography, and robotic surgery for prostate cancer.
"Oncology patients throughout Southwest Louisiana benefit from the innovative technology and compassionate service provided by our highly skilled professionals. The best of diagnostic, treatment, follow-up and support services necessary for cancer patients are available right here," Leger says.
Out of the nearly 5,500 hospitals in the nation, only one in three met the eligibility requirements to be scored in the nationally recognized Best Hospital List.
Hospitals were measured in 16 categories ranging from cancer and cardiology, to Respiratory and Ear Nose and Throat. To measure 12 of the 16 service lines, three elements were judged equally according to reputation, death rate, and care-related components such as nurse staffing and technology. The remaining four service lines were based on hospital reputation among specialists.
The 12 specialty lines in which CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital was scored are Cancer, Heart and Heart Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Geriatric Care, Gynecology, Kidney Disease, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Ear, Nose and Throat, Respiratory Disorders, and Urology.
To be considered a "best hospital" in these service lines, hospitals must adhere to several standards. First, eligibility to even be considered for ranking requires that any of these conditions be met: be a teaching hospital, be affiliated with a teaching hospital, or have at least six important medical technologies from a list of 13.
Once eligibility is acquired, it must be determined whether the hospital can be ranked in a particular specialty. This requires the hospital to have either performed a minimum number of certain procedures over three years, or had to have been nominated in the annual specialist survey.
A score is then assigned based on the hospital's reputation, death rate and factors like the nurse-to-patient ratio, most advanced technology and patient services. The hospitals with the top 50 scores in each specialty are then ranked.
